Transportation in Portland

The average commute time for drivers in Portland is just over 20 minutes. Obviously, your commute time really depends on where you live in relation to where you work. However, if you want to leave the car at home, or go carless all together, Portland has a great transportation network for a city it's size. If you prefer to commute on two wheels, Portland has more than 400 miles of bike lanes throughout the city. Biking in Portland isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. We celebrate bikes year round with events like Pedalpalooza, the Bridge Pedal, and the largest of its kind, the World Naked Bike Ride.

Portland also has a robust public transportation system. The region’s public transportation system is run by Trimet, which operates buses, streetcars, and a light rail system know as MAX. Around 700 buses run more than 80 bus lines that reach each quadrant of the city. The MAX lines run all the way out to Gresham to the East, Hillsboro to the West, and Clackamas to the south. You can also use the MAX to get to and from the Portland International Airport. More recently, Portland has also welcomed bike and scooter rental companies for those taking quick trips that are just beyond walking distance.
